[ cheers and applause ] settle down. we'll get to it. we'll get to it. oh, my goodness. we will get there. we will get there. it's so exciting. today is going to be great. let's get to the news first. here's what people are talking about. the government shutdown is still messing up everything. actually joe biden had to cancel his appearance at a democratic fund raiser tonight because of the shutdown. and it got kind of awkward when they announced that biden wasn't coming and they raised twice as much money. [ laughter ] didn't understand it. it didn't make much sense. very interesting turn of events. the whole mess with the shut down isn't making anyone happy. a new survey, found that 9% of

americans have considered giving up their u.s. citizenship because of the constant arguing in washington. not good. today, even obama was like, "are you sure i wasn't born in kenya? i never saw a birth certificate." [ laughter ] can you believe that? 9% of americans would give up their citizenship because of all the fighting in d.c. you know things are bad when people are getting caught at the mexican border they're being sent back to america. i got to get out of here, man. we wanted to find out what people were thinking about all of this. so, we put our own survey about the shutdown. the answers were pretty surprising. take a look at this. the first question was what is the best solution to the congressional fighting? 10% said democrats should negotiate with republicans. 35% said republicans should give in and fund obamacare. and finally, 55% said, settle it "hunger games" style. [ laughter and applause ] here's another question we asked.

do you agree with the gop? 30% said they do not agree with the gop. 25% said they are undecided about the gop. finally, 45% said they're down with opp, yeah, you know me. it's a great song. i can do this. everyone getting ready for the winter olympics. we're psyched here at nbc. it's right around the corner. with germany just unveiled their rainbow colored olympic uniforms. which seem to be like a subtle protest against russia's anti-gay laws. yeah, you can tell how much the world has changed when germans are the ones like discrimination is just wrong. [ laughter ] we're doing something. germans -- >> steve: yeah, come on. >> jimmy: things aren't going smoothly for the olympics over in russia. in fact, just yesterday, president vladamir putin lit the olympic torch in a ceremony. and just minutes later a gust of wind blew it out. in a related story, the wind is now missing. yeah. he sleeps with fish. that's right the olympic flame went out briefly while a runner was carrying it in russia. but a guy quickly reignited it with the lighter. check it out. watch this. >> jimmy: here is the guy trotting.

halloween is canceled. don't even -- hey, if you are single you might want to listen to this. i read about a dating website that lets you get to know people first before you see their picture. so, if there is anything better than love at first sight. it is falling out of love at first sight. hey, nice to meet you. i think we should see other people. a little gossip out of england. there are reports prince harry and his girlfriend are planning to get married next year. which makes sense. because he has been holding his bachelor party for the past year and a half. [ laughter and applause ] have you heard about this? this is kind of a big deal. new jersey just announced it will allow internet gambling starting in november. that's right. but if people in new jersey want to gamble online before then they should just check out the dating site where you can't see what other people look like. that's a good gamble. and finally, i don't know if you guys noticed this last night. but i was watching the show "once upon a time" on abc. and one of those, one of those animated advertisements popped up on the bottom of the screen. like, showing what new show is coming up or whatever. and it kind of showed up in an awkward spot. keep an eye on the woman in the scene. >> we need to discuss the deal you made with charming. >> you have to be a bit more specific, deary. >> he came to you searching for something powerful enough to vanquish the queen? [ laughter and applause ] >> jimmy: boing. nerds across the country are like, "so, that's where it is." i knew it. we have a great show. give it up for the roots right there. [ cheers and applause ] i'm so psyched. today has just been crazy running around for me. first my voice is a little hoarse. sorry, last night i was at a charity and benefit for mario batalli foundation. they were honoring jamie oliver. and so, he gets an award. he is standing there. in the front of a guitar. and so i'm sitting there. he goes, "well, thank you so much." he goes, "well i don't, i don't know what to do now. i can't play any songs. i don't know any songs." and he kinda looks over at me. i have to go do something now? i go what song do i know? i don't know any song. i forgot. i don't know why i don't plan out what i do. i should. because i play guitar.

i sing "wild things" by the troggs. i was like -- ♪ wild thing i'm really going for it. it's very easy chords. i'm just screaming it. everyone is singing. all of a sudden i hear drums. i go that's cool. one of the guys from wilco are there playing. i turn around and it's jamie oliver playing drums. and he's really good. oh, this is kind of fun. but that's why my voice is hoarse. i apologize about that. but also i have been screaming because paul mccartney is here. [ cheers and applause ] freaking out. have you heard the record. we heard the record. early. we played it. it's fantastic. this album is so good. it is out october 15th. it's called "new." the song, the hit off of it is "new" as well. that's the name of the song. he'll do that tonight. but it has got like, there is kind of a soul type of song. acousticy songs. i know, mark ronson did a couple of tracks he produced mark ronson, amy winehouse. it's, it's going to ge one of the best mccartney albums i've ever heard. it's so good. i'm freaking out. let just get to the show. i know i'm geeking out. but, i have to get it out of the way. because when he's on i can be like, what's up paul.

"new." i love this. we'll be talking about this later on. you have been on tour since may, right? >> yeah, on and off. yeah. >> jimmy: it is a fantastic show if you guys haven't seen this. it's unbelievable. there's so many songs. >> thank you, jimmy. it's great. awesome. awesome, dude. >> jimmy: how do you pick the songs? how do you pick a set list? >> you know what i do -- i just imagine i am going to the show. what would i like to hear him do? so i start there. people pay a lot of money to come to the show, so i don't want to do some big crazy set that i alone want to see. so i start with those, and then i work down to other songs that

i think might be interesting, new. and finally songs i wanna do. >> jimmy: it's unbelievable. i was watching that. and at one point -- because you are playing a song on the piano and the piano just starts lifting up in the air, and then it just doesn't stop. you go all the -- at one point, i couldn't see you. it went, like, 80 feet up in the air. >> that's because you were on drugs. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah, that didn't happen? it actually didn't? it didn't happen? >> it didn't happen. i want up with an acoustic guitar. [ cheers and applause ] you know, when keith spoke -- keith richards. he said you actually weren't as much rivals as we all think. you guys kind of knew each other. right? >> yeah, i mean, i have never really seen him except to kind

of to say, "hey, how are you doing, man? love your new record." [ whistles ] until -- i went on holiday to the turks and caicos, and he has a place there. so every afternoon we hung and it was a pretty cool week. >> jimmy: how fun is that? oh, my gosh. the two of us would have been freaking out. just seeing you on the beach. i'd be like, "what is going on right now?!" a beatle and a rolling stone. >> yeah, you know. the thing about keith is -- he was -- kind of like, acting like the manager of the hotel. he had come around to the bar -- "are you all right? are you okay? you want a drink?" he would be like -- i said, "keith. you know. you should get paid for this." [ laughter ] >> jimmy: you should let people do this. you don't have to do this, keith. >> he was loving it. bringing his little dog around. and talk to all the guests. >> jimmy: he's a charming man. >> very nice. >> jimmy: i did go to the rolling stones at barclay's center here in brooklyn. and i got my beers and my pretzel and whatever. and i'm walking to my seats spilling beer on everybody. and i go, "excuse me." and i hear this voice go -- [ imitating mccartney ]

"no problem, come right through." and it's you. and i go, "i am sitting next to paul mccartney at a rolling stones concert." i chugged the first beer completely. and then i had the other one. shoving a pretzel in my mouth. like, "oh, my god. this is unbelievable!" and mick jagger starts singing "i want to be your man", which you wrote. so i'm going, "what do i look at?" do i look at mick jagger, singing the beatles, or do i look at the beatle listening at the rolling stones. [ applause ] it was a pickle. it was a conundrum. [ applause ] it was the worst concert of my life. so stressed out. it started my drinking problem. this record is insane. it's so good. every song is so different and fun. like, you have three different producers on here, right? >> four. >> jimmy: four producers. yeah, it's just fun to listen to. and i was like, i listened to them going, "how do you write these songs?" do you still just, you wake up and go, "i got it." and then do you record it in the phone? >> yeah. well, it comes different ways.

sometimes it's like that. sometimes you kind of just sit down and do it. i had a little period beginning of this album when i was just first dating nancy. and i was starting to write some stuff. and i knew she was, she was in new york. i was in england. so i knew she was five hours behind. so i would drop my little daughter off at school. come back, write a song, and then ring her up -- "do you want to hear a song?" >> jimmy: five hour block of time to figure it out. >> it was a great motivation having an audience at the end of it. >> jimmy: she loves you. everything is just like, "that's great." >> that's why everything is great. >> jimmy: "another great song, paul." another great one, yeah. i mean, are there songs that you don't use? >> yeah, there's a few we don't use. >> jimmy: because i could cut an album. your crappy songs are the best songs i have ever written. you always have my favorite album covers. this one here is so cool. what artist is this? this is a famous piece, yes? >> no, it is not actually. [ laughter ] it's not actually what you say. [ imitating paul ] >> jimmy: "how dare you!" >> no, it's -- it's like a tribute to a famous artist who does the fluorescent -- a guy called dan flavin. but this was suggested by stella's husband. we had a meeting about this. and we had the logo. and he said, "you could do it in this manner." so i said, "that's a damn good idea." >> jimmy: yeah, it's so simple. i can see, every time i look at this now, i read the word "new" even though it's not connected. but can even read it as "wew", or "nem." >> "men," oh, that's a good album. >> jimmy: that's a good album, yeah. for the boys. you have four producers on this. different styles. why did you go with those four different ones? >> i was looking for one

producer that i would get on very well with. i like the work of these four guys. so i was going to try them and in the end, i was going to say, "this guy is the best." but i liked them all. >> jimmy: you liked them all so you just kept them all. >> so, i, i have done a track with each one of them. >> jimmy: there are so many different styles. it's fantastic and it works great. >> i was a little bit worried, you know, that you would have so many different styles. but then i thought back to a lot of beatle albums with this crazy variety. so i told them, "that's okay." >> jimmy: and these producers must have freaked out. they're like, "oh, my god i am getting calls from paul mccartney." you can literally work with any one. is there any one that you would love to work with? >> yeah, there's lots of people, you know. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: a lot of people. a lot of people out there, yes. >> a lot of people. >> jimmy: yeah, yeah, yeah. some people are easier to get than you think, you know? >> yeah. >> jimmy: sometimes they're right under your nose.
